Blending Experience, Trust and Authenticity in Leadership

Have you ever wanted a kitchen table natter with a really approachable, but super effective person, to ask them “but hang on, how did you do that”? Well that is exactly what I got to do with Brigadier Clare Phillips CBE, and the result is this week’s podcast episode.
I’m so pleased that my tenuous link with Clare (we were both at Royal Military College Sandhurst at the same time, she was in the intake above me) and her genuinely open and helpful personality, meant that when I scooted her a message to ask if she’d be willing to chat with me for the podcast, she said yes immediately!
Clare is currently serving as the Deputy Military Secretary at the Army Personnel Centre in Glasgow. With career highlights such as being Co-Chair of the Army LGBT+ Network, and REME Corps Colonel (2016-2018), you know she has some interesting stories to tell.
I knew it was going to be a great chat when her answer to my first question began “Well, that happened by accident, which I think is the beginning of all good stories…”
Episode Highlights:
- Clare’s unapologetic approach to leadership: Discover how she harnessed the power of remaining true to her core values and identity, even in the challenging environment of the military.
- From emulation to authenticity: Learn how Clare shifted from trying to fit the mold to drawing strength from her unique self.
- Embracing the past to navigate the present: Clare discusses tapping into her wealth of experiences to make informed decisions amidst uncertainty.
But that’s only the beginning. I simply had to ask her about the incredible changes that have happened both in military policy, and day-to-day culture, since I first joined up in 1995. Clare candidly addresses this transformation particularly in regard to LGBTQ+ integration and acceptance.
Through her lens, you’ll witness the evolution from rejection and discrimination to celebration and inclusion. You’ll hear her voice, as an atypical leader throughout her service from junior officer to one of the most senior roles.
We chatted in detail about what it means to be trauma-sensitive, trauma-informed, and how to simultaneously move people forward while acknowledging damage done in the past.
Cultural Shifts and Supportive Leadership:
- Reflections on the changing defense organization post-2000 and how it’s imperative for leaders to understand and support those who have suffered trauma.
- “Fighting with Pride,” a heartfelt initiative advocating for the rights and support of LGBT+ veterans.
- Clare’s personal accolades and the influence of her partner, as they navigate the world as trailblazers in diversity and leadership.
The Making of a Leader:
- Overcoming self-doubt: Clare reveals how she moved past challenges in public speaking and leadership by gaining confidence through sports and rigorous training.
- Insights on the psychology of leadership, exploring the nuances of gender in command roles.
The Power of Positivity and Consistency:
- We discuss the impact of consistent, positive, and authentic interactions on effective leadership.
- Let her final comment stay with you: “Be consistent, be positive, be you.”
Your Takeaway:
This episode is an invitation to step back, reassess your leadership approach, and forge a path that celebrates authenticity and empathy. Clare’s story is a testament to the immense power that comes from embracing our true selves and the history that shapes us.
