Strengthening Minds: Nature-Based Learning for Child Well-being
Imagine a world where the key to unleashing a child’s potential lies not within the confines of a traditional classroom but amidst the rustling leaves and open skies of the great outdoors. Many of us are familiar with forest school movement for kindergarten, or even some days out for older kids. But what about as a routine offering for older students struggling with school life? This blog and new podcast episode is on my experience as a parent volunteer chaperone at the International School Luxembourg with the Nature-Based Learning for Well-being initiative.
Evolutionary Psychology
I learnt a ton from the amazing speaker Dr Annie Swanepoel a the recent conference here in Luxembourg on Evolutionary Roots of Human Brain Disease:
- Human evolution is still at the stage of Hunter-gatherer societies;
- Human evolution has not kept pace (could not) with the speed at which modern technology is so rapidly changing our world;
- In terms of human evolution, hunter-gatherer societies are simply one tiny gene shift away.
One group most impacted by this is children in schools, with modern high-stakes exams, sitting at desks, in highly structured environments. But humans simply didn’t evolve to learn best by a single adult instructing a same-age group of children. We evolved to learn by play, example, and practice.
Little Things? There are no Little Things in Life!
Happily, even small changes can make a difference. In this episode I share my experiences on a recent day out as a parent volunteer chaperone at our International School of Luxembourg’s Nature-Based Learning for Well-Being program. Check them out on the ISL facebook page.
Here’s a sneak peek of what’s inside:
Cultivating New Growth:
I share how outdoor activities akin to those of hunter-gatherer societies offer a rich soil for nurturing growth, development, and resilience in children, especially those with ADHD.
Holding Space for Neurodiversity:
Exploring the nuanced world of neurodiversity and why understanding neurodivergent individuals is crucial not only for inclusive education but for trauma-informed leadership. It’s a discussion where empathy meets evolution.
Mental Wealth for Organizational Health:
Leaders, it’s time we recognize the undeniable symbiosis between mental well-being and professional excellence. We’ve got to go beyond talking about prioritizing mental health post-pandemic, and take the next steps to change the mental landscape of workplaces.
Learning Takes Flight:
Watching children blossom during nature-based learning exercises, acquiring skills vital for navigating the complex terrain of life, backed by companionship and safety monitoring.
The Neurotype Advantage:
A shift in perspective can illuminate the evolutionary advantages of ADHD. Learn how what’s often seen as a challenge could actually be a powerful asset, allowing risk-taking and innovation to shine.
On the Move with Dopamine:
Movement is more than exercise—it’s a catalyst for cognitive engagement and focus. Discover how integrating physical activity into learning could align education with our evolutionary biology, unlocking untapped academic and personal potential.
