Neuromyths are pervasive, often misleading, and can significantly impact how we perceive ourselves and our capabilities. In this compelling journey through the complex world of neuroscience and coaching psychology, I dismantle some neuromyths, challenge traditional thinking, and offer practical, relatable insights for personal and professional growth. Let me explain – come and listen to the short podcast I recorded for you to bring it to life.

Unmasking the Triune Brain Myth

The concept that human brains have evolved in distinct lizard, mammal, and human sections has long been a traditional narrative. However, the truth is far more intricate. While the brain’s incredible functions cannot be fully encapsulated, understanding its mechanisms through simplified models (such as this excellent Hand Model of the Head Brain by Dr Dan Siegle) can profoundly impact self-awareness and human development.

Sorry but no, our brain is not in three evolutionary sections.

Left Brain vs. Right Brain: A Not-So-Divided Reality

We’ve all encountered the simplistic yet captivating notion of left-brained individuals being logical and right-brained individuals being creative. However, the reality is much more integrated and complex. By transcending these oversimplified dichotomies, we can embrace the multifaceted nature of human cognition and behavior, fostering a more holistic approach to self-leadership in both personal and professional settings. However this is my favourite, and in the podcast I say why!

Sorry but no, our brain is not delineated Left and Right.

Redefining Learning and Sleep

The allure of learning during sleep has captured our imaginations for years. While the concept may not hold up under rigorous scientific scrutiny, the power of intentional learning and subconscious mind engagement endures. Understanding the nuanced interplay between the conscious and subconscious realms can empower individuals to tap into their cognitive potential and chart new pathways for personal growth and development.

Sorry but no, much as I’d like to believe this too, the science isn’t there (yet) – our brain does not learn through things we listen to in our sleep.

The Bottom-Up, Outside-In, and Top-Down Approach

Dr. Sarah McKay‘s revolutionary perspective on the brain as a dynamic interplay of biology, mind, and environment presents a fresh framework for understanding neural processes. Embracing this approach can transform how we navigate the challenges of self-leadership, resilience, and mental well-being, transcending traditional paradigms and embracing a more holistic integration of neuroscience and psychology.

Phew, good news at last! Because I learnt neuroscience via Havening Techniques as a therapeutic intervention to assist clients in distress, I’ve known a long time that the simplified models aren’t exactly accurate – but this BU-OI-TD is something practical for coaching clients and I’m enjoying exploring it!

Empowerment Through Self-Leadership and Applied Neuroscience

As a coaching psychologist and trauma-informed leadership coach, my passion lies in uncovering practical, actionable insights that enable individuals to thrive and flourish. By integrating science-based metaphors and graspable, applied models, I strive to bring the power of self-leadership and neuroplasticity to the forefront, catalyzing tangible, transformative change in every facet of life.

Seeking Resilience, Thriving in Leadership

In the current global upheavals, leaders and individuals alike face unprecedented challenges. The burdens of personal and professional well-being weigh heavily, demanding astute leadership and flexible resilience. My commitment is to guide or be a companion to leaders and individuals, arming them with invaluable tools to navigate adversity, build flourishing teams, and champion lasting mental health.
